Phospho Soda Recall

Bowel Prep Products and Relationship to Kidney Damage

An over-the-counter bowel cleanser that is used to prep for colonoscopies or other surgeries that is promoted by the makers as a laxative has been recalled.  C.B. Fleet's Phospho Soda is an oral sodium phosphate (OSP) that works by draining the liquid of the body.  Despite the promotion of the product as a laxative or its particular use in preparation for surgery, high doses of the phospho soda may result in kidney damage.

Phospho soda and other OSPs may result in the collection of calcium-phosphate crystals in the kidneys that lead to health problem.

Patients at Risk

Elderly, young children and people with kidney failure are particularly at risk.

Other symptoms that may occur include dehydration, vomiting, dizziness, nausea and abdominal pain.

Action

In December 2008, the F.D.A. issued a safety warning for the risks of developing acute phosphate nephropathy (renal damage) from the high dose use of these products.
