Chantix

Chantix May Affect Mood and Behavior of Users

Chantix (varenicline) is a smoking cessation medication manufactured by Pfizer, Inc.  On November 20, 2007, the FDA first informed patients about the risk between Chantix and severe changes in mood and behavior.  Since that time, additional data has indicated a greater likelihood of an association between the medication and behavioral changes.  In May 2008, the warnings included with Chantix were strengthened to encourage patients and physician to monitor mood changes.

Patients At Risk

In its early communication about the behavioral changes, the FDA notes the changes may occur within days to weeks of starting the medication.  According to the manufacturer, individuals with prior psychiatric illness should advise their physician of their medical history.
