Denture Cream
Popular Denture Creams May Be Linked to Zinc Poisoning
Well known denture creams like Super Poligrip and Fixodent, have been reportedly linked to zinc poisoning that results in paralysis, tingling in hands, loss of sensation and other neurological problems. Some individuals have related symptoms similar to wearing gloves or stockings. Zinc poisoning can lead to dysesthesias and paresthesias. Dysesthesias is unpleasant abnormal sensations in the hands and feet and is often described as pins and needles. Parasthesias produces similar complaints, but occurs without contact. Other conditions that may result include: copper deficiency resulting in fatigue and impaired energy levels and growth, anemia, bone marrow failure, neuropathy.
An August 2008 article in the journal "Neurology" reported that severe neurologic problems were associated with the use of denture cream. Blood studies showed increased levels of zinc. The study found that denture cream users were exposed to far above the daily recommended allowance of zinc through the denture cream.
In some circumstances, the lack of awareness of this potential association results in misdiagnosis of patients. Some patients have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) or demyelinating syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD) and Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
Patients At Risk
The extended use of denture cream may result in the exposure to excessive and dangerous levels of zinc.
