Yaz / Yasmin - Birth Control Pills
If you or a loved one suffered from blood clots, stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, gallbladder disease, or death while using Yasmin, Yaz, or Ocella (the generic form), you may have a claim for damages. Background
YAZ (dsrospirenone [dsrp] and ethinyl estradiol) is an oral contraceptive manufactured by Bayer. Originally approved in 2006, YAZ is one of the only contraceptive marketed in the US that contains dsrospirenone.
YASMIN is another oral contraceptive that uses dsrp in its makeup. Yasmin was originally developed by Berlex laboratories Experts believe that dsrp acts as a diurectic that causes a number of health problems with blood levels and the gall bladder.
OCELLA is the generic form of these medications. It is manufactuered by Teva Pharmaceuticals and was brought onto the market in 2008. Ocella contains dsrp like its brandname counterpart YAZ.Warnings From the FDA
Both manufactuers have received warnings from the FDA concerning the misleading nature of their adverstisements related to the safety and use of these birth control pills.
Recently, the FDA, Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising and Communications advised Bayer that two of its ads concerning YAZ were misleading because "they broaden the drug;s indication, overstate the efficacy of YAZ, and minimize serious risks associated with the use of the drug." )Pg. 1 Thomas Abrams, R.Ph., M.B.A.). The FDA advised Bayer to restate its promotional materials.Other Warnings

While all oral contraceptives have risks of side effects, the use of drospirenone may increase levels of potassium in the blood that may result in hyperkalemia in some users. These risks are increased with certain patients especially for users who are overweight, have diabetes or high blood pressure.Lawsuits
Several lawsuits have been filed against Bayer for injuries associated with the use of Yaz/ Yasmin. In July 2009, a petition was filed to consolidate these lawsuits into a single court for the purposes of discovery and pre-trial motions. In October, the cases pending in federal courts have been consolidated as an MDL in the Southern District of Illinois.
The Court noted on October 1 that "[a]ll actions share factual questions relating to at least one of the drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives Yaz and Yasmin, which are manufactured by Bayer. Plaintiffs in the products liability actions challenge the safety of those oral contraceptives and bring claims for personal injuries or wrongful death stemming from use of the drugs...." (MDL No. 2100 is IN RE: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing and Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation.)
